Almaty surprised me. Soviet bones, green parks, mountains right there at the end of every street. Cheaper than you'd think and far emptier than Central Asia's better-known stops. Give it a week minimum. Day trips into the Tian Shan, evenings in Panfilov Park, and one weekend out at Big Almaty Lake or Charyn Canyon.
